I have long been a fan of visual novels, and their backgrounds and art direction, so I was thrilled when I was approached with a commission to develop a series of backgrounds for the in-development visual novel, "Errant Heart".

For those not in the know, visual novels are a type of adventure game, mostly popular in Japan, where the player follows a written story and makes choices which lead the story into multiple branches. The graphics usually consist of high-res static 2D character sprites and background images.

The story of Errant Heart takes place mostly in the fictional town of San Moritz, which is based around an Italian town in the 1940s. I ended up doing a series of 7 exterior shots of different locations seen throughout the town. Each image has 4 variations, depending on time of day and weather, making a total of 28 images which were produced over a period of 3 weeks. Each background was created using a combination of 3D and digital painting.

You can find the full set of backgrounds that I produced elsewhere in my gallery.

As of this writing the visual novel is early in development and does not have a set release date. I encourage you to try it out when it comes out.

Thanks... I did a lot more for the real version, something like 23 scenes ... the first public release should be coming out some . I will announce it here and you can also subscribe to the updates at www.kickstarter.com/projects/8…
I played an early version of it a few weeks ago and really enjoyed the story.

I'm sorry, I should've been more specific, I mean working on visual novels. I just think they look pretty cool, it's like reading stories but in a different format

yeah, they are neat, as for my involvement I'm not involved in the story, only the art so it is not much different from other work. But you can feel the passion of the creators more than with commercial projects.

(sigh)...I can understand but I have post it up..I didn't like 2 in half days to get it done for nothing for a friend..

I'll take the full responsibility for all the trouble...just to see a good friend being happy to see a pic gift...

and I'll still put credit in it...

and at the end of the author comment: "Used with permission" I thought it might was to ask permission to you..or way around..

like I said I can understand if you want to get mad of me for this..I'm just doing this for a friend..

How can you be allowed to post these on DA if the game hasn't come out yet? lol

Anyway, in determining the time of day, did you set the object first and then render using different lightsources? Just curious :)

I got permission from the client to put them up.
Yes, I set up each scene and rendered using different lighting setups depending on time of day. And of course heavy post production as well

Haha I guess it can serve as promotion as well, so it won't hurt at all to post here =D

One day I'll try what you have done now. You make me want to learn 3d =D

Yeah, one of my big motives for doing commissions is to increase the portfolio.. so I always ask if it can be used.

If you are looking into 3D, to start out you might consider making some very basic geometry to use as a basis for 2D backgrounds. It is a good way to quickly get exact perspective and scale while also being flexible. I know of a couple of 2D artists who do this; and actually I believe it is the method that the Errant Heart team will be using for the rest of the backgrounds. If you are interested there are a couple of good free programs like Blender out there.

As for me, I guess I'm on the opposite side of the fence, I have always been doing 3D but have been wanting more lately to get into 2D.

Truly a good motive.. It can spur your growth too =D

I was using sketchup for the basis for my older drawings, but lately I just find it easier to make the perspective by feeling =P But I guess it's really a good method to save time. I tried blender already, but back then I was just learning the basics and not really serious. Now that I understand lighting better, I think I'm gonna give it another try =P

Haha what a funny story indeed. We are both trying to cross the other side :)
